California is leading the charge toward a zero-carbon future, and at the forefront of this transformation is the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES). This dynamic public-private partnership is dedicated to advancing renewable hydrogen production, infrastructure, and deployment across the state. With its ambitious projects, diverse partnerships, and commitment to community impact, ARCHES is shaping California into a global leader in hydrogen energy.
What is ARCHES?
Founded with over 400 network partners, including industry leaders, government agencies, labor organizations, and community groups, ARCHES is building a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem in California. By leveraging the state’s abundant renewable energy resources, ARCHES aims to decarbonize transportation, industry, and energy sectors while prioritizing environmental and energy justice.
Key Goals:
Reduce Emissions: Hydrogen will be pivotal in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
Create Green Jobs: ARCHES is committed to fostering economic growth by creating high-quality careers in the renewable energy sector.
Build Infrastructure: Develop robust hydrogen infrastructure, including fueling stations and pipelines, to support widespread adoption.
Major Milestones
Federal Funding for California’s Hydrogen Hub
In July 2024, ARCHES received up to $1.2 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop the California Renewable Hydrogen Hub.
This landmark investment will:
Enable large-scale hydrogen production using renewable resources.
Build infrastructure to support hydrogen storage, transport, and distribution.
Drive adoption of hydrogen in hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as heavy-duty transportation and industrial operations.
Community Benefits Pathway Strategy
ARCHES has launched a Community Benefits Pathway Strategy to ensure that the benefits of the hydrogen transition are distributed equitably. This includes targeted investments in disadvantaged communities to improve air quality, create job opportunities, and enhance energy security.

Strategic Focus Areas
ARCHES is tackling some of the biggest challenges in the renewable energy transition.
Here’s how:
Decarbonizing Heavy Industry and Transportation
Hydrogen is a game-changer for hard-to-abate sectors such as:
Heavy-duty trucks and freight
Ports and goods movement
Energy-intensive industries like cement and steel
ARCHES aims to dramatically reduce emissions in these sectors by replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen.
Infrastructure Development
ARCHES is working to establish a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure that includes:
Hydrogen refueling stations for transportation.
Pipelines and liquefaction facilities for efficient hydrogen transport.
Energy storage systems to support renewable energy integration.
Collaboration and Leadership
ARCHES thrives on collaboration. Its extensive network of partners from academia, government, and private industry drives its innovative projects. The organization’s board of directors provides strategic oversight, ensuring alignment with California’s ambitious climate goals and fostering a culture of inclusivity and innovation.
A Vision for the Future
ARCHES envisions a future where renewable hydrogen powers industries, transportation, and communities in a sustainable, equitable, and scalable way. The organization’s projects address California’s climate challenges and position the state as a leader in the global hydrogen economy.
The Benefits of ARCHES’ Vision
Global Leadership: California sets an example for other regions striving to adopt renewable hydrogen.
Economic Growth: The hydrogen economy drives investments and job creation across the state.
Environmental Justice: Cleaner air and sustainable energy systems uplift vulnerable communities.
