CS Energy, a Queensland government-owned energy company, is at the forefront of Australia’s hydrogen revolution. By leveraging its expertise in renewable energy, CS Energy is developing projects that integrate hydrogen into the nation’s energy mix, contributing to decarbonization and energy security. CS Energy is driving the transition from innovative demonstration plants to strategic partnerships to a sustainable energy future.

Key Projects and Initiatives

Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant

One of CS Energy’s flagship projects, the Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant, is designed to showcase the potential of green hydrogen.

Location: Adjacent to the Kogan Creek Power Station near Chinchilla, Queensland.

Renewable Energy Source: Powered by a 2 MW solar farm and backed by a 2 MW/4 MWh battery storage system.

Technology: Includes a 1 MW hydrogen electrolyzer, producing approximately 75,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen annually, and a 30 kW hydrogen fuel cell.

Purpose: The plant serves as a testing ground for hydrogen production, storage, and handling, and as a platform to explore hydrogen’s role in grid services and energy systems.

The facility is expected to commence operations in early 2025, marking a major milestone in Queensland’s renewable hydrogen journey.

Brigalow Peaking Power Plant

CS Energy is developing the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant, a hydrogen-ready power station designed to enhance grid stability and support renewable energy integration.

Capacity: 400 MW, with the ability to operate on up to 35% hydrogen and eventually transition to 100% hydrogen fuel.

Fast-Start Technology: Ensures quick response times to fluctuating energy demands, complementing the variability of renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

Significance: This plant positions CS Energy as a leader in hydrogen-based power generation, showcasing how traditional energy infrastructure can evolve to support a zero-carbon future.

Collaboration with Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

CS Energy has partnered with QUT on the Hydrogen Process Research & Development Project, an $8.5 million initiative to advance hydrogen technologies.

Focus Areas: Research into hydrogen production, storage, and end-use applications.

Industry Impact: The project brings together researchers, technology developers, and industry stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen solutions in Australia.\
